What Language Does Game Maker Studio 2 Use?

Game Maker Studio uses Game Maker Language also known as the abbreviation GML. GML can be used as drag an drop, which is great for new users to learn basics of programming such as using If condition statements. GML can also be used a writen code for more advanced or novice users. GameMaker and GML has been around since about 2000 and over the years it has since many updates and takeovers. However Game Maker Language is more or less still the same. There have been functions removed and many new functions added which has meant older GML projects would have many syntax errors however the newer Game Maker version included built in convertors for older projects to improve the compatibility.

Some people have likened Game Maker Language to javascript and I can see the similarities but there are distinct differences. The new versions of Game Maker Language now also allow users to define functions and constructors similar to how you would use them in Javascript. For me the best thing about GML is the ease of use. Because it was developed as a software to make it easier for people to make game, lot of the complex coding and tasks were wrapped up by GML functions and Game Maker compilers, so you could focus on the game itself.

I have made a Youtube video giving a demonstration of Game Maker Studio on Live showing a WIP platform game being developed using Game Maker Language. This is also known as Game Maker Language!

In this video I have shown the following:

  • The Game Maker Studio Language
  • The Game Maker Online Manual
  • Usage of Common Syntax And Snippets such as For and While loops
  • How to Use Functions And Scripts
  • How to draw a health bar on the screen within the view
  • Use collision detection with parent / child solid objects
